Desert Pines Equine Medical and Surgical Center, located in Las Vegas, Nevada provides an externship for individuals with a strong interest in equine surgery and medicine. Desert Pines Equine Center (DPEC) welcomes visits from veterinary students. The hospital prefers externs currently in their 3rd or 4th year of veterinary school.
We are a 4 doctor practice, one office manager, receptionist, 6 veterinary technicians and stall / maintenance help. We have recently expanded the hospital with a new building. We have two large indoor treatment /diagnostic rooms with stocks, two sets of outdoor stocks, 2 ICU stalls, 13 open air covered stalls, and large turnout area. Desert Pines Equine Center strives to keep the practice progressive with technology including, digital radiography, digital ultrasound, IRAP, shock wave, powerfloats, endoscopy, arthroscopy, etc.
DPEC prefers to schedule externships for 2 - 6 week blocks. Externs will be involved in clinical rounds and weekly journal club discussions.
Housing will be provided on-site. There is a refrigerator and microwave available for use. In exchange, you will be expected to assist with treatments and be on-call for the duration of your stay. Pets are not allowed.
A clean and professional appearance is required. Ragged, faded jeans and T-shirts are not considered appropriate attire.
Apartment for Externship
Our caseload is varied, but generally consists of:
- 25% Lameness
- 25% Preventative Medicine
- 15% Reproduction
- 15% Medicine
- 20% Surgery
Please complete the AAEP Avenues application and email, fax or mail your Curriculum Vitae and letter of intent, including specific dates you would like to participate in our externship program. Please include 3 references from clinicians aware of the externs' desires and capabilities.
